Our 9/10 JV team traveled to Forest City to play in our first tournament of the season. The bracket was small, but the teams we saw fought hard to win every basketball game. Our first game we took on team Fokus out of Greenville, SC. While securing a lead at half, we fell short and walked out with a loss. Our second game of the day was an exciting event for all to watch. We played Clover Thunder, out of Clover. The Clover came out strong and quickly jumped to a lead. Fighting back in the second, the Phoenix came back within a few by halftime. In short, this game came down to the wire. With only seconds remaining, we called a time out under our basket. We were all tied up. The ball was inbounds and Nijayah Cruell took it the length of the court for a layup to put the Phoenix up by 2 with only 1 second left in the game. The Clover called a timeout and teams talked strategy. The Clover threw a long range pass to an open teammate, threw up a shot right at the three-point line and…swish. The crowd went crazy, parents stormed the court only for the official to walk over holding up 2 fingers. The game had just been tied and now it was three minutes of overtime. The Phoenix rose to the challenge and walked out with a win.
Day two meant we had to play the Clover again in order to make it to the championship game. The Clover was not about to walk out there without a fight. With help from the bench that included 3 of our younger players on our 6th grade team, the comeback kids pulled out from behind to secure a spot in the championship game. The Phoenix faced the Fokus in the final game of the weekend to try and take home the gold for the first time ever. Fighting a hard battle, we couldn’t seem to secure the win by rallying back and forth for points the entire game. Heads held high, we came back to Brevard wearing silver.
The Lady Phoenix will play in their next tournament on April 4th in Charlotte for the AAU regionals.
